HOUSTON -- Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for its knee and hip replacement surgeries by demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific care. The certification award recognizes Memorial Hermann Southeast’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s state-of-the- art standards.

Memorial Hermann Southeast underwent a rigorous on-site review in November 2014. A Joint Commission expert evaluated the hospital for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients and families, including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management.

"In achieving Joint Commission certification, Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital has demonstrated its commitment to the highest level of care for its patients with knee and hip replacements,” said Michele Sacco, M.S., interim executive director, Certification Programs. “Certification is a voluntary process and I commend Memorial Hermann Southeast for successfully undertaking this challenge to elevate its standard of care and instill confidence in the community it serves.”

"This certification solidifies our position as a hospital that is focused on providing safe, quality care to our patients,” said Victor Van Phan, D.O., medical director of the Joint Replacement Program at Memorial Hermann Southeast. “Achieving Joint Commission certification in knee and hip replacement, for our organization, is a major step toward maintaining a culture of excellence.”

The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification Program, launched in 2002, is designed to evaluate clinical programs across the continuum of care. Certification requirements address three core areas: compliance with consensus-based national standards; effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and an organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.

“We are honored by The Joint Commission’s recognition of our outstanding Knee and Hip Replacement Surgery Program,” said Erin Asprec, CEO of Memorial Hermann Southeast. “However, we are even more proud that our physicians, nurses, and staff support each other and are focused on providing safe, high quality care to each of our patients.”
